Flights for Parents from India to NZ This Summer: A Family Guide

Flights for Parents from India to NZ This Summer A Family Guide

Bringing Mum and Dad over for Christmas and a Kiwi summer? Here is how to get the visa, the flights and the journey right.

At a glance: when should I book flights for parents from India to NZ?

Start now. Your parents will need a New Zealand visitor visa, and processing can take weeks or even months, so apply before anything else. Book flights for December to February as early as you can, because the weeks before Christmas are the busiest of the year. Choose a fare you can change if the visa takes longer than planned. Ask for wheelchair help when you book, not at the airport. Buy travel insurance with medical cover before they leave India.

Why a Kiwi summer is the perfect time for a visit

For many families in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, December to February is the best time to have parents stay. The kids are off school. Work slows down over Christmas. The days are long and warm, and there is time for beach days, drives and big family dinners.

It is also when Delhi, Punjab and much of North India are at their coldest and foggiest. Many parents are happy to swap that for a New Zealand summer. The catch is that thousands of other families have the same idea, so the planning needs to start early.

When to book: a simple timeline

New Zealand school Term 4 ends no later than Friday 18 December 2026. Term 1 of 2027 starts between Thursday 28 January and Thursday 4 February, depending on the school. That shapes when flights are busiest.

Visitor visas for parents: the basics

Indian passport holders need a New Zealand visitor visa before they fly. Here are the two options most families look at. Rules and fees change, so always check the official Immigration New Zealand website before you apply.

  • Visitor Visa. The standard option for a holiday or family visit.

  • Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa. For parents and grandparents of New Zealand citizens or residents. Your child or grandchild sponsors the visit. It allows multiple visits over three years, up to six months at a time, and up to 18 months in total. It must be applied for from outside New Zealand, and medical checks are part of the process. On 25 September 2026, Immigration New Zealand listed the cost as from NZD 441, with 80% of applications processed within 3 months.

Three months is a long time when Christmas is 13 weeks away. That is why the visa comes first. If you book flights before the visa is approved, choose a fare with flexible change conditions, and check what it costs to move the dates.

6 tips to make the journey easier for older parents

1. Choose the shortest sensible connection

There are no non-stop flights between India and New Zealand yet, so every trip has a stop. A two to four hour connection is usually the sweet spot. Long enough to walk and rest, not so long that they are stuck in a terminal all night.

2. Book wheelchair assistance in advance

Airports are big, and the walk to a connecting gate can be long. Ask for wheelchair help when you book. It usually covers check-in, the connection and arrival in Auckland, and it often speeds up the queues too.

3. Keep the whole trip on one ticket

One ticket means bags are usually checked through to Auckland and the airline looks after them if a connection is missed. It is far less stressful than two separate bookings.

4. Request meals and seats early

Vegetarian, Jain or diabetic meals can be requested ahead. An aisle seat makes it easier to get up and walk, which helps on a long flight.

5. Pack medicines in hand luggage

Keep all regular medicines in their original packaging, with a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s letter. Bring enough for the whole stay plus a few extra days.

6. Tell them about New Zealand biosecurity

New Zealand is very strict about food, seeds and plant products. Parents often pack homemade sweets, spices or pickles. Anything like this must be declared on arrival, or they risk an instant fine. If in doubt, declare it.

Travel insurance: do not skip it

Most visitors to New Zealand have to pay for their own health care. For the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, Immigration New Zealand says the parent or sponsor must cover all health costs and recommends full medical insurance for the stay.

Buy cover before your parents leave India. Make sure it covers the whole trip, including any pre-existing conditions, and that the policy is clear about what it pays for in New Zealand. What to pack for a New Zealand summer

A Kiwi summer is warm, but it is not an Indian summer. Help your parents pack for it:

  • Sun protection. The sun in New Zealand is strong, even on cloudy days. Pack sunhats, sunglasses and sunscreen.

  • Layers. Days can be warm and evenings cool, especially near the coast or in the South Island. A light jacket and a warm cardigan are a must.

  • A rain jacket or umbrella. Summer showers are common.

  • Comfortable walking shoes for beaches, parks and day trips.

  • Light luggage. They will likely take gifts home, so leave space in the suitcase for the return.
