There is no non-stop flight yet, but there are plenty of good one-stop options. Here is how to choose the right flight home to Mumbai.

Is there a direct flight from Auckland to Mumbai?

Not yet. A non-stop link between New Zealand and India has been talked about for years. Earlier hopes of an Air India service by 2026 have not come through. Recent reports say Air New Zealand and Air India are still studying the idea, with talk now of the end of 2028.

Until a route is announced and on sale, every Auckland to Mumbai trip has at least one stop. That is not a bad thing. One-stop routes give you more airlines, more departure times and more prices to compare. A well-timed layover is also a chance to stretch your legs, have a proper meal and reset before the second flight.

Flight time, airports and fares

Flight time. With one stop, the whole journey usually takes from around 18 hours. A longer layover can push it past 24 hours. Shorter is not always better. A connection that is too tight can be stressful, especially with children or elderly parents.

Airports. Mumbai now has two international airports. Most flights still use Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The new Navi Mumbai International Airport began international flights in July 2026. Check your ticket carefully, especially if family are picking you up.

Fares. On 29 September 2026, our home page showed Auckland to Mumbai from NZD 920 per person. Fares change daily and depend on the date, airline and fare type. Search live prices on our flights page.

6 tips for booking Auckland to Mumbai flights

1. Book early for December

Many Kiwi Indian families head home once school finishes. The better-value seats for mid December go first. If you are flying for the summer holidays, book as soon as your dates are set.

2. Compare the whole journey, not just the price

Look at total travel time, layover length and arrival time in Mumbai. A slightly higher fare with a smooth connection can be worth it.

3. Choose a sensible layover

Two to four hours is comfortable for most people. Very short connections leave little room for delays. Very long ones are tiring, especially overnight.

4. Check the baggage allowance on both flights

Gifts, sweets and clothes for family add up fast. Allowances vary by airline and fare type. Check before you pack, not at the check-in desk.

5. Stay flexible by a day or two

Leaving midweek, or a few days before the rush, can make a real difference to the total fare for a family.

6. Students and teachers: use MannPass

Verified students, teachers, lecturers and education staff in New Zealand can join MannPass for free. It takes $25 off selected return flights from New Zealand to India, including Mumbai. It is valid for 30 days, can be renewed, and can’t be combined with other offers.

Flying to Mumbai with family

Many of our travellers book for parents, children and grandparents together. A few simple tips:

  • Keep everyone on one booking. It helps keep seats together and makes changes easier.

  • Travelling with elderly parents? Ask us about wheelchair help and special meals when you book, not at the airport.

  • Plan for the kids. Pack snacks, a change of clothes and something to do for the layover.

  • Check your documents early. NZ passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Make sure your passport has plenty of validity left.

  • Check travel advice before you go. See SafeTravel for the latest advice on India and on any country you connect through.
