Diwali Gifts to Take to India from NZ A Baggage and Packing Guide

The honey for Dadi, the chocolates for the cousins, the merino for Nana. Here is how to pack it all, stay within the rules, and arrive with every gift in one piece.

At a glance: what Diwali gifts should I take to India from NZ?

The favourites are mānuka honey, New Zealand chocolate, merino wool, natural skincare, and dried fruit and nuts. Pack honey and anything liquid in your checked bag, and keep your receipts. Under India’s Baggage Rules 2026, travellers of Indian origin, including OCI cardholders, can bring gifts worth up to ₹75,000 duty-free. Coming back to New Zealand, declare every food item. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.

The Kiwi gifts families in India love

Every Diwali, our travellers ask the same thing: what should I bring? The best gifts are the ones that feel like New Zealand, travel well and don’t spoil. Here are the ones families tell us go down best.

Gift

Why it’s a hit

How to pack it

Mānuka honey

The classic Kiwi gift. Elders love it with warm water or in chai.

Checked bag. Sealed jar, tape the lid, wrap in a zip-lock bag and clothes.

NZ chocolate

Kids and cousins always ask for it. Easy to share at Diwali.

Centre of your suitcase, away from the outside walls. India can still be warm in November.

Merino wool

Light, soft and warm. Perfect for cool North Indian winter evenings.

Either bag. Rolls small and protects fragile gifts.

Natural skincare

NZ creams, balms and sunscreen are popular with aunties and sisters.

Checked bag if a container is over the cabin liquid limit.

Dried fruit, nuts and biscuits

Easy to share when guests visit over the festival days.

Keep in sealed, shop-bought packs with labels.

Gifts for kids

All Blacks gear, Kiwi picture books and soft toys.

Either bag. Light and hard to break.

Packing tips for families

Gifts add up fast, and so does the weight. Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare type. Some fares count kilograms, others count pieces, and allowances can differ between airlines on the same trip. Check your ticket first, then shop.

1. Check your allowance before you buy

Look at your e-ticket or ask us. It is far cheaper to plan around your allowance than to pay excess baggage at the airport.

2. Weigh your bags at home

A cheap luggage scale saves a lot of stress at the check-in counter.

3. Share the load across the family

Spread gifts across everyone’s bags. If one bag is delayed, not all the gifts go missing.

4. Wrap gifts in India, not in NZ

Security may need to open a wrapped present. Bring wrapping paper and do it when you arrive.

5. Keep receipts in one envelope

If customs asks what your gifts are worth, you can show them in seconds.

6. Leave room for the trip home

You will come back with new clothes, jewellery and sweets from family. Pack light going over.

7. Keep valuables and medicines in your cabin bag

Jewellery, cash, medicines and a change of clothes should stay with you, never in a checked bag.

What's allowed on the way to India

Liquids in your cabin bag

Honey, ghee, lotions, perfume and even some sweets with syrup count as liquids at airport security. Anything over the cabin limit goes in your checked bag. If you buy duty-free liquids at Auckland Airport, remember you will go through security again at your stopover. Ask for a sealed bag and keep the receipt, or simply pack them in your checked luggage.

Indian customs: the duty-free allowance

India’s Baggage Rules 2026 came into force on 2 February 2026. Under the new rules:

  • Indian residents and travellers of Indian origin, including NRIs and OCI cardholders, arriving by air can bring goods, including gifts, worth up to ₹75,000 duty-free. That is up from ₹50,000 under the old rules.

  • Foreign tourists have a lower allowance of ₹25,000.

  • Alcohol is limited to 2 litres and cigarettes to 100 sticks.

  • Your used personal belongings don’t count towards the allowance.

  • Gold and jewellery have separate rules. Check them before you carry any.

Over the limit? Walk through the red channel and declare it. Paying a little duty is far better than a penalty.

Packing sweets and mithai

Most families buy fresh mithai in India, and that is the easiest option. If you want to take sweets from New Zealand, choose dry, sealed, shop-bought ones. Milk-based sweets can spoil on a trip of 18 hours or more. Pack them in airtight tins, put the tins in zip-lock bags, and wrap them in clothes in the middle of your suitcase.

Coming home: what not to bring back into NZ

This is where Kiwi families most often get caught out. New Zealand has strict biosecurity rules, run by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

  • Declare all food on your New Zealand Traveller Declaration. That includes mithai, spices, homemade snacks, dried fruit, nuts, honey, ghee and prasad.

  • Fresh fruit, seeds, meat and plants are high risk and may be taken off you.

  • Items made from wood or plant material, such as carvings or dried flower garlands, need declaring too.

  • Not declaring can cost you. MPI can issue an instant NZD 400 fine, even if it was an honest mistake.

The good news: declaring is free. Many packaged items are allowed through once they have been checked. When in doubt, declare it.
