There is no non-stop flight, but there are good one-stop options. Here is how Kiwi families get home to Kolkata, and when to go.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Auckland to Kolkata?
No airline flies non-stop from Auckland to Kolkata. You connect once, usually in Singapore with Singapore Airlines, Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines, or Bangkok with Thai Airways. You can also fly into Delhi and take a domestic flight on to Kolkata. Total travel time is about 17 hours at the quickest, often longer depending on the layover. Kolkata’s airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (CCU). The best time to go is November to February, when the weather is cool and dry.
Is there a non-stop flight from Auckland to Kolkata?
No. There has never been a direct service between New Zealand and Kolkata, and none is planned that we know of. Every journey has at least one stop. That is not bad news. The one-stop routes through South East Asia are well timed, and the hub airports are easy to use with children and older parents.
Kolkata is India’s gateway to West Bengal and the whole east of the country. Many of our Bengali customers in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington fly home for Durga Puja, for weddings in the winter season, or to spend the New Zealand summer holidays with grandparents. Whatever the reason, the routing choices are the same.
Airlines and routes that connect Auckland and Kolkata
These are the connections we book most often. Flight days and times change by season, so treat this as a guide and check live schedules before you commit.
Airline | Connect in | What to know |
Singapore Airlines | Singapore (SIN) | Daily flights on both legs. The Singapore to Kolkata sector takes about 4.5 hours. Changi is one of the easiest airports in the world for a family transit. |
Malaysia Airlines | Kuala Lumpur (KUL) | Kuala Lumpur to Kolkata runs several days a week, arriving late evening. Often one of the quickest total journey times from Auckland. |
Thai Airways | Bangkok (BKK) | The Bangkok to Kolkata leg is a short overnight flight, arriving after midnight. Plan your pickup at the other end. |
Via Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru | An Indian hub, then a domestic flight | Fly into a major Indian city and connect on Air India or IndiGo. More stops, but it can suit you if you want to visit family in two cities on one trip. |
Flying from Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown? You will usually connect through Auckland first, or go via Australia. Ask us to price both. Sometimes the Australian routing works out better on time, sometimes on fare.
We do not show a Kolkata fare on our homepage today, because it moves with the season. For comparison, Auckland to Delhi is from NZD $920 per person, checked 8 October 2026, prices change daily. Kolkata fares are usually a little higher than the big four Indian cities, so call us for a live quote.
When to go: Durga Puja, winter and the quieter months
Kolkata has a clear calendar, and your fare follows it.
Season | What it is like | Our advice |
Durga Puja (October) | The biggest festival of the year. In 2026 the main days fall around 17 to 21 October. The city is lit up, crowded and joyful. | Book as early as you can. Seats on the Kolkata leg fill first. Arrive a few days before Shashthi to settle in. |
Winter (November to February) | The pleasant season. Cool mornings, mild days, almost no rain. Wedding season too. | The best time for a family holiday. Christmas on Park Street is popular, so late December is busy. Early November and late January are calmer. |
March to May | Hot and humid. Schools in India are on summer break by May. | Fares are often softer. Fine if you are visiting family and staying indoors in the afternoons. |
June to September | Monsoon. Heavy rain, waterlogged streets some days. | Quietest months for fares. Allow extra time for airport transfers. |
If you are planning a longer trip, you could land in Kolkata for Puja and head south afterwards. Our Hampi and Badami guide shows how to build a summer holidays trip around Bengaluru.
7 tips for booking flights Auckland to Kolkata
1. Book the whole journey on one ticket
A single ticket means your bags are checked through and the airline looks after you if the first flight is late. Two separate bookings can save a little money and cost you a lot of stress.
2. Check the layover length
Two to four hours is comfortable. Under 90 minutes is tight with children. Over eight hours and you may want a transit hotel, which Changi and Kuala Lumpur both have inside the terminal.
3. Look at the arrival time in Kolkata
Several connections land late at night or after midnight. That is fine if family is collecting you. If not, arrange a prepaid taxi or hotel pickup before you fly.
4. Compare the Indian hub option
Flying into Delhi and connecting to Kolkata adds a stop, but fares to Delhi are often lower and the domestic leg is only about two hours. It is also the easy answer if you want to see relatives in both cities.
5. Be flexible by two or three days
Around Durga Puja and Christmas, moving your departure by a couple of days can make a real difference to the fare. Midweek departures are usually better value than Friday and Saturday.
6. Students and teachers: join MannPass
Verified students, teachers, lecturers and education staff in New Zealand can join MannPass. It takes $25 off selected return flights between New Zealand and India. It is valid for 30 days from verification, renewable, and cannot be combined with other offers.
7. Spread the cost
If paying the full fare today is a stretch, ask us about flexible payment options such as PayLite and Afterpay when you book.
Family and practical tips for the trip
- Visas. New Zealand passport holders need an Indian e-visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and check the New Zealand Government’s travel advice at safetravel.govt.nz.
- Time difference. Kolkata is 7.5 hours behind New Zealand during our daylight saving months. Children usually adjust within two or three days.
- Baggage. Allowances vary by airline and fare type. Check before you pack gifts, and remember that a domestic connection in India may have a lower limit than the international leg.
- Older parents. Ask us for wheelchair assistance and special meals at booking. Hub airports can involve long walks.
- At CCU. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International is about 17 km from the city centre. Prepaid taxis and app cabs are available outside arrivals.
- Keep documents handy. Carry printed copies of your e-visa approval and return ticket. Immigration may ask for both.
