One ticket or separate tickets? This matters more than you think
From Wellington, it can be tempting to book a cheap domestic flight to Auckland, and a separate international ticket from there. We understand why. But it carries real risk.
On one ticket (a “through-ticket”): if your Wellington flight is late and you miss the connection, the airline is generally responsible for getting you onto the next flight. Your bags are usually checked through to Delhi.
On separate tickets (a “self-transfer”): if the first flight is late, the second airline does not have to wait or rebook you. You may need to buy a new fare. You also collect your bags, walk between terminals and check in again.
Wellington weather can be windy, and early flights do sometimes get delayed. If you do self-transfer, leave a very generous gap, or fly to Auckland the day before. For families with children or older parents, we nearly always recommend one ticket all the way through.

February to March: often calmer, with pleasant weather in Delhi before the heat builds.
April to June: Delhi is very hot. Fares may be quieter, but plan your days around the heat.
Midweek departures: often worth checking. Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday can be easier than a Friday or Sunday.
