Christmas in India from NZ: Goa, Kerala or Mumbai, Which Suits Your Family?

Christmas in India from NZ Goa Kerala or Mumbai Which Suits Your Family

The school year ends, the whole family flies home, and one week needs to be special. Here is how three very different Indian Christmases compare for Kiwi families.

At a glance: where should a Kiwi family spend Christmas in India?
Goa for a beach Christmas with midnight mass and a party atmosphere, but book early and expect New Year crowds. Kerala for a calmer, more traditional Christmas around Fort Kochi, with the backwaters an hour away. Mumbai for a big-city Christmas with Bandra lights, shopping and restaurants, and easy flights from Auckland. All three are dry and warm in late December. Book by early November. Christmas-week seats and hotels fill fast.

Why Christmas in India works so well for Kiwi families

New Zealand’s summer holidays are a gift for anyone with family in India. Term 4 wraps up by mid-December and Term 1 of 2027 does not start until late January. That is six weeks, not a rushed ten days. Most families spend the bulk of it with parents and grandparents in their home town. The question is what to do with Christmas week itself.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so it makes a natural long weekend. Many families use it to take the grandparents somewhere, or to give the children one proper holiday inside the family visit. Goa, Kerala and Mumbai are the three we get asked about most. The right one depends on your family, not on which is “best”. This comparison is written for families flying out of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, on NZ school dates and in NZ dollars.

Goa: Christmas on the beach

Goa at Christmas is a celebration you can hear from the road. Villages string up lights, churches fill for midnight mass, and the beach shacks run late. For a Kiwi family it feels oddly familiar. A warm Christmas by the sea is what we do at home, just with more music.

The catch is timing. Christmas week is busy, and New Year is busier still. Hotels in the popular beach belts climb in price and the good ones go early. From Auckland you fly into Mumbai first, then take a short domestic flight or an overnight train. Build a night in Mumbai each way so a delayed international flight does not cost you the domestic one.

Kerala: a quieter, older Christmas

Fort Kochi has one of the longest Christian histories in India, and at Christmas it shows. The old Portuguese and Dutch streets fill with paper star lanterns, churches hold carol services, and the whole area has a gentle festive feel without Goa’s crowds.

The backwaters are close. A day trip, or a night on a houseboat near Alappuzha, turns a Christmas visit into a proper holiday with very little driving. Costs are generally kinder than Goa, though houseboats and heritage hotels still book out over Christmas.

Flights from Auckland to Kochi are one stop through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, roughly 17 to 21 hours all up. See our full guide to flights from Auckland to Kochi, including arriving at Nedumbassery.

Mumbai: Christmas with the city lights on

Mumbai does Christmas with volume. Bandra’s lanes and old Catholic neighbourhoods light up, bakeries sell sweets by the kilo, and the malls and markets go all in. If your family already has a base in the city, Christmas week is the easiest of the three to organise. No extra flights, no second hotel.

Late December is also the nicest week of Mumbai’s year. The humidity drops and the seafront walks fill with families. Hotels are not cheap in the best areas, but food and transport are affordable. Auckland to Mumbai is one stop and one of the routes we book most.

How to combine Christmas week with the family visit

Most families fly for six weeks with relatives and want one week that feels like a holiday. A few ways to put it together:

  • Family first, Christmas second. Land in your home city in mid-December, settle the jet lag, then travel to Goa, Kochi or Mumbai for the week of 25 December. Return to family for New Year and January.
  • Open-jaw tickets. Fly Auckland into one city and home from another, for example in through Kochi and out through Mumbai. It avoids backtracking.
  • Bring the grandparents. Book accessible rooms early and keep travel days short.
  • Keep New Year flexible. If you are not set on Goa for 31 December, go for Christmas week and leave before the New Year surge.

5 booking tips for Christmas in India from NZ

1. Book by early November

Christmas-week seats and hotels fill first because every NZ family works to the same school calendar. By early November the cheapest fare classes to Mumbai and Kochi are usually gone.

2. Fly out before the last day of term if you can

Term 4 ends no later than Friday 18 December, and the weekend after is the busiest departure window of the year. Leaving two or three days earlier can mean more choice and better fares.

3. Look at the reference fares, then call

Auckland–Mumbai is from NZD $920 per person and Auckland–Delhi from NZD $920 per person, checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily. Auckland–Bengaluru is from NZD $992 and Auckland–Ahmedabad from NZD $1,020 on the same basis. Auckland–Kochi is quoted on request. Christmas week will sit above these starting points. Treat them as a guide, not a promise.

4. Use MannPass if you are a student or teacher

Verified NZ students, teachers, lecturers and education staff can join MannPass for free and take NZD $25 off selected return NZ–India flights. It is valid for 30 days from verification, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.

5. Sort visas and travel advice early

NZ passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Check the government’s travel advice at safetravel.govt.nz and apply for visas well before you fly. Ask our team about flexible payment options when you enquire.
