There is no long-haul flight out of Wellington to Asia. Here is how Wellington families get to Mumbai with the fewest headaches.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Wellington to Mumbai?
There is no direct long-haul flight from Wellington to Asia. Most travellers fly to Auckland, then one stop through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or a Gulf hub to Mumbai. Book it all on one ticket so bags check through and the airline rebooks you if a connection is missed. Auckland to Mumbai fares start from NZD $920 per person (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). Wellington fares are quoted on request.
Why there is no direct flight from Wellington to Mumbai
Wellington Airport has a short runway between the hills and the sea, and the wide-body jets that fly to Asia do not operate from it. International flights from Wellington go to Australia and a few Pacific islands. So every Mumbai trip from the capital starts with a hop: north to Auckland, or across the Tasman. That gives you choice. The right route depends on budget, layovers and your children’s bedtimes.
Two ways to get from Wellington to Mumbai
Option A: Wellington to Auckland, then one stop. The domestic leg takes about an hour. From Auckland you connect to Mumbai with one stop in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or a Gulf hub such as Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Most of our Wellington travellers take this route, because Auckland has the widest choice of airlines to India.
Option B: Wellington to Sydney or Melbourne, then onward. Trans-Tasman flights are frequent, and you connect through the same Asian or Gulf hubs. Some weeks this is cheaper or lands at a better hour. The trade-off is often two stops before Mumbai, plus Australian transit rules for non-NZ passports.
Route | Stops | Total time (approx.) | Good for | Watch out for |
Via Auckland and Singapore or Kuala Lumpur | 2 | 22 to 28 hours | Most families. Quick, easy hub transfers. | The Auckland terminal change. |
Via Auckland and Hong Kong | 2 | 23 to 28 hours | One long sector, then a shorter one. | Fewer daily options. |
Via Auckland and a Gulf hub | 2 | 26 to 30 hours | Generous baggage on many fares. | Longer journey. Often a late-night Mumbai arrival. |
Via Sydney or Melbourne, then a hub | 2 to 3 | 24 to 30 hours | Seeing family in Australia on the way. | Extra stop. Transit visa rules for non-NZ passports. |

5 connection tips for Wellington travellers
1. Book it all on one ticket
This is the one that matters most. When the Wellington leg and the international legs sit on one booking, your bags are tagged through to Mumbai and the airline must get you there. If fog delays your Wellington flight, they rebook you. On separate tickets, that risk is yours.
2. Leave more time in Auckland than you think
Minimum connection times are tight. For domestic to international at Auckland, we suggest two and a half to three hours. Wellington weather can hold flights on the ground. A morning Wellington departure for an evening international flight is the comfortable pattern.
3. Know the Auckland terminal change
Auckland’s domestic and international terminals are separate buildings. There is a signposted walkway of about 10 to 15 minutes and a free shuttle bus. Your bags transfer on a through ticket, but you still cross on foot or by bus. With a pram or grandparents, allow extra. Auckland Airport is in the middle of major terminal works, so follow the signs on the day.
4. Pick the hub that suits your layover
Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are known for quick, easy transfers. Gulf airports are big and busy, so a two-hour connection feels shorter than it sounds. With small children, a slightly longer layover and a quiet rest area is kinder than the shortest possible stop.
5. Check Australian transit rules if you go via Sydney or Melbourne
New Zealand citizens generally need nothing extra to transit Australia. If anyone in your group holds an Indian or other passport, check whether they need an Australian transit visa before you book.
Arriving in Mumbai: Terminal 2 and getting to the suburbs
All international flights into Mumbai land at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2. Immigration can be slow when several long-haul flights land together, so have your passport, visa or OCI card, and your Mumbai address ready. After customs, you have three main options:
- Family pick-up. The most common choice. Agree a meeting point in the arrivals hall and share your flight number so they can track it.
- Prepaid or app-based taxi. Prepaid counters are inside the terminal, and app cabs have marked pick-up points. Confirm the fare before you get in.
- Mumbai Metro. The underground Aqua Line (Line 3) has a station at Terminal 2, linked by a foot bridge, and runs south through Bandra Kurla Complex. Good for light luggage and daytime arrivals.
Andheri and Bandra are close to the airport. South Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai can be well over an hour by road. At night, a pick-up or prepaid taxi is simplest.
For Wellington's Indian families and students
Wellington’s Indian community is spread across the region, from Lower Hutt and Johnsonville to Newlands, Porirua and the city. Most Mumbai trips we book from the capital are families going home for weddings, festivals and the summer holidays, plus students at Victoria University of Wellington heading back after exams.
The summer holidays are the busiest window. Term 4 ends no later than Friday 18 December 2026, and Term 1 2027 starts between 28 January and 3 February 2027. If you are flying then, book early, because the good Auckland connections fill first.
- Book everyone on one booking. Seats stay together and changes are simpler.
- Ask about special meals and wheelchair assistance for grandparents when you book, not at the airport.
- Check documents early. New Zealand passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply well before you fly.
- Read the official advice on SafeTravel, the New Zealand government’s travel advice site, and register your trip.
