At a glance: a Darjeeling trip from New Zealand
Fly Auckland to Kolkata with one stop, then take a one-hour flight to Bagdogra and drive three to four hours up to Darjeeling. December and January are the NZ summer holidays and the clearest months for mountain views, but expect cold nights near freezing. Allow seven to nine days to cover Darjeeling and Gangtok. NZ passport holders need an Indian visa plus a Sikkim entry permit. Ask us for an Auckland to Kolkata quote.
Why December and January work for a Darjeeling trip from New Zealand
Most people visit Darjeeling in spring or autumn. For a Kiwi family that is the middle of the school year. The summer holidays are when you can actually go, and they line up with the dry season in the hills. Term 4 2026 ends no later than Friday 18 December, the latest date set by the Ministry of Education. Leave that weekend and you can be looking at Kangchenjunga before Christmas.
- Clear skies. October to December is the classic window for seeing Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, from Darjeeling. January is usually clear too, with more chance of a cold snap.
- Cold, not snowy. Darjeeling sits at about 2,000 metres. December days reach roughly 11 to 16°C and nights drop to around 2 to 7°C. Gangtok, at about 1,650 metres, averages around 4 to 7°C over winter.
Getting there: Auckland to Kolkata, then up to the hills
You fly Auckland to Kolkata with one stop, covered in our Auckland to Kolkata route guide. From Kolkata there are three ways up.
| Option | Time | Good to know |
| Fly Kolkata to Bagdogra, then drive | About 1 hour in the air, then 3 to 4 hours by road to Darjeeling or 4 to 5 hours to Gangtok | Quickest and easiest with children or elderly parents. Book a private car in advance. |
| Overnight train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) | Roughly 10 to 11 hours, overnight | The Darjeeling Mail runs from Sealdah station in Kolkata to NJP, then a 3 to 4 hour drive to Darjeeling. |
| Darjeeling Himalayan Railway “toy train” | A full day from NJP, or a 2-hour joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back | UNESCO World Heritage listed. The full climb is slow and sometimes suspended, so most families do the Ghum joyride instead. |
What to see in Darjeeling
Give Darjeeling three nights. The town is steep and the altitude makes the first day feel slow.
- Tiger Hill sunrise. Leave the hotel around 4 am. On a clear December morning the first light hits Kangchenjunga and, on a very good day, you can pick out Everest far to the west.
- Tea gardens. Happy Valley is walkable from town, and the tasting rooms are open and warm in winter.
- Batasia Loop. The spiral where the toy train turns a full circle, with the mountains behind it.
- Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the zoo. Tenzing Norgay helped found the institute. The zoo next door has red pandas and snow leopards, and grandparents can take it at their own pace.
Into Sikkim: Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake and Rumtek
Sikkim is a separate state and works differently for overseas visitors. Read the permit section before you book.
- Gangtok. Sikkim’s capital, four to five hours by road from Darjeeling. MG Marg, the car-free main street, is lovely in the evening.
- Tsomgo Lake. A glacial lake at about 3,750 metres. In December and January it is often partly frozen and the yaks wear blankets.
- Rumtek Monastery. About 24 km from Gangtok. One of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet, and an easy half-day.
Permits for New Zealand passport holders
These rules apply to all foreign nationals. Indian passport and OCI card holders are treated differently, so tell us who is in your group.
- Entering Sikkim. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit, also called a Restricted Area Permit, usually valid for 30 days. You need your passport and Indian visa. It can be applied for online, at the Rangpo checkpoint, or through a registered Sikkim tour operator. Arrange it before you travel.
- Tsomgo Lake. Foreign nationals need a separate Protected Area Permit, issued for one day and only through a registered tour operator. Allow at least a day’s notice.
- Nathula Pass. The border road beyond Tsomgo Lake is not open to foreign nationals. If a package promises Nathula to a New Zealand passport holder, question it.
- North Sikkim needs its own multi-day group permit, and Gurudongmar Lake is also closed to foreigners. Leave it for another trip.
Rules change and permits are sometimes suspended after landslides. Check SafeTravel and confirm with your operator the week before you go.

7 tips for families and elderly parents
1. Go up slowly
Darjeeling at 2,000 metres is fine for most people. Tsomgo Lake at 3,750 metres is not. Spend a full day in Gangtok first, keep the lake visit short, and check with a doctor if anyone has a heart or lung condition.
2. Treat the roads as part of the trip
Every leg is winding. Book a private car, sit older parents in the front, and keep motion-sickness tablets handy.
3. Pack real winter gear
Thermals, a down jacket, beanie and gloves for Tiger Hill. Many hotels have no central heating, so ask for a room heater and extra blankets.
4. Carry cash and copies
Carry rupees, plus printed copies of passports, visas and permits. Checkpoints want paper.
5. Sort visas and insurance early
New Zealand passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly. Check that your travel insurance covers altitude.
6. Students and teachers: use MannPass
