No non-stop flight, but plenty of good ways to get there. How Canterbury families reach Mumbai with the least fuss.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Christchurch to Mumbai?
There is no direct flight. Every trip has at least two legs. Most families fly Christchurch to Auckland, then one stop through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub. The other option is Christchurch across the Tasman to Sydney or Melbourne, then on to Mumbai. Allow roughly 22 to 30 hours door to door. Book it all on one ticket so your bags go straight through and the airline protects your connections. Auckland to Mumbai fares start from NZD $920 per person (checked 7 October 2026). Christchurch fares are quoted on request.
Two ways to fly from Christchurch to Mumbai
Christchurch has no non-stop service to India. That is fine. Thousands of Cantabrians make this trip every year, and the connections are well worn.
Via Auckland. A domestic hop of about an hour and a half, then a long-haul flight to a hub, then a final leg into Mumbai. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are the most common hubs. Gulf hubs such as Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi add flying time but can open up better fares and timings.
Via Australia. Christchurch has direct trans-Tasman flights to Sydney and Melbourne, around three and a half hours. From there you connect on to Mumbai, usually through an Asian or Gulf hub. Good if you have family in Australia to see on the way.
Route | Legs | Approx. total time | Good for |
Christchurch – Auckland – Singapore – Mumbai | 3 | 22 to 25 hours | Shortest overall. Easy airport for kids and grandparents. |
Christchurch – Auckland – Kuala Lumpur – Mumbai | 3 | 22 to 26 hours | Often good value. Similar timings to Singapore. |
Christchurch – Auckland – Gulf hub – Mumbai | 3 | 26 to 30 hours | More departure choices. Longer in the air. |
Christchurch – Sydney or Melbourne – hub – Mumbai | 3 | 24 to 30 hours | Families with a stop in Australia on the way. |
Rough door-to-door estimates including connections. They change with the airline, the day and the layover.
Through-ticketing, minimum connection times and bags
This is the part that matters most for families. There is a big difference between one ticket and two.
On one ticket (through-ticketed), the airline sets a legal minimum connection time, your bags are checked through to Mumbai, and if your first flight runs late, the airline must get you on the next available service. Your seats, meals and assistance requests travel with the booking.
On two separate tickets, none of that is promised. If Christchurch to Auckland is delayed and you miss the international flight, you buy a new ticket. We see this every year. Book end to end on one booking, even if it looks a few dollars dearer.
At Auckland, the domestic and international terminals are separate buildings, linked by a walkway and a bus. On a through-ticket, your bags move across without you. If you must self-connect, allow at least three hours.
One small habit: when you check in at Christchurch, look at the bag tag. It should say BOM. If it says AKL, ask before you leave the counter.
Arriving at Mumbai Terminal 2 late at night
Many flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur land in Mumbai late in the evening or in the small hours. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 2 handles international arrivals. After immigration and bags, you have three ways into the city.
- Family pick-up. The easiest. Agree a meeting point in arrivals and share your flight number so they can track it.
- Pre-paid taxi counters inside the terminal. Fixed fare, paid up front.
- App cabs from the marked pick-up zone, if you have an Indian SIM or airport Wi-Fi.
Night traffic is lighter than daytime. Western suburbs such as Andheri, Bandra and Vile Parle are close to the airport. South Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai are further, often an hour or more. Carry the address written in English and Hindi or Marathi, and keep some small rupee notes and the children’s jackets handy. The terminal is cold at 2am even when the city is warm.
Flying from Canterbury: a growing community
Canterbury’s Indian community has grown steadily. Christchurch has Indian grocers, temples and gurdwaras, cricket clubs and a full festival calendar. The University of Canterbury and Lincoln University draw students from across India, and many fly home over the summer break.
That matters for timing. December departures from Christchurch sell early because students, families and grandparents all head north at once. For Christmas or New Year in Mumbai, book in October. It takes NZD $25 off selected return flights between New Zealand and India, is valid for 30 days from verification, and can be renewed.
6 tips for South Island families
1. Book one ticket, end to end
One booking from Christchurch to Mumbai protects your connections, your bags and your seats together. It also makes changes simpler if a date moves.
2. Choose a connection that suits the kids
Two to three hours at the hub is the sweet spot. Long enough to stretch, eat and change a nappy. Short enough that nobody melts down. Avoid connections under 90 minutes with young children, even when they are legal.
3. Pick seats together when you book
Families booked together are usually seated together, but ask us to confirm it. Request a bassinet for babies under two early, as they are limited.
4. Pack for two climates in the cabin bag
Leave Christchurch in June or July and you leave in winter and land in heat. Layers in the cabin bag, light clothes in the hold.
5. Ask for meals and assistance
Child meals, vegetarian and Jain meals, wheelchair assistance for grandparents. All free, and all requested before the flight, not at the gate.
6. Sort your documents early
New Zealand passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly. Check every passport has at least six months left. It is the most common thing that goes wrong at check-in.
