There is no direct flight, but there is a smart way to do it. Here is how Wellington travellers reach Bengaluru with the fewest stops and the least stress.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Wellington to Bengaluru?
There are no non-stop flights Wellington to Bengaluru. Every trip has at least one stop, and most have two. The smoothest options go via Auckland and Singapore with Singapore Airlines, or across the Tasman to Sydney or Melbourne and then on to India with Qantas or Air India. Allow roughly 19 to 26 hours in total. Guide fare: Auckland–Bengaluru from NZD $992 per person, checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily. Wellington fares are quoted on request. Call 09 973 1940.
Why there is no direct flight from Wellington
Wellington Airport has a short runway with water at both ends. That is why the big wide-body jets that fly long-haul to Asia rarely use it. Wellington’s international flights are mostly trans-Tasman and Pacific services on smaller aircraft.
So every journey from the capital to India starts with a hop. You fly to Auckland, Sydney or Melbourne first, then join a long-haul flight. The hop is short, and the whole trip can be booked on one ticket.
Your main route options
Here are the routings we book most often for Wellington travellers heading to Bengaluru. Times are approximate and depend on the layover.
Route | Typical airlines | Stops | Total time | Good to know |
Wellington – Auckland – Singapore – Bengaluru | Air New Zealand, then Singapore Airlines | 2 | About 22 to 26 hours | Comfortable hub, frequent flights to Bengaluru. No Australian visa needed. |
Wellington – Sydney or Melbourne – Bengaluru | Qantas or Air New Zealand, then Qantas | 1 | About 17 to 20 hours | Fastest option when a non-stop Australia–Bengaluru service is running. Indian passport holders may need an Australian transit visa. |
Wellington – Sydney or Melbourne – Delhi – Bengaluru | Qantas or Air New Zealand, then Air India | 2 | About 22 to 26 hours | Good if you want a few days in Delhi on the way. Same transit visa note applies. |
Wellington – Auckland – Kuala Lumpur – Bengaluru | Air New Zealand, then Malaysia Airlines | 2 | About 19 to 24 hours | Often one of the quicker two-stop options. Worth comparing on price. |
Wellington – Auckland – Dubai or Doha – Bengaluru | Air New Zealand, then Emirates or Qatar Airways | 2 | 28 hours or more | Longest, but very comfortable, and handy if you are also visiting family in another Indian city. |
Most of our Wellington travellers end up choosing between Singapore and Sydney. Your passport, your patience for layovers and the fare on your dates decide it.
Journey times and when to fly
Plan on 19 to 26 hours from Wellington to Bengaluru for a well-connected itinerary. The fastest trips, around 17 hours via Sydney, rely on a non-stop Australia–Bengaluru flight that does not run every day. A relaxed layover of three to four hours in Singapore or Sydney usually makes the trip calmer than a tight one-hour dash.
When should you go? Bengaluru is pleasant most of the year. October to February is the best stretch, with warm days and cooler evenings. June to September is monsoon season. For Kiwi families, the squeeze is the summer holidays: Term 4 ends no later than Friday 18 December 2026, and the first two weeks after that are the busiest departure dates of the year. Fares for those dates are usually at their best right now and climb through November.
If your dates are flexible, flying out in the first week of December or after New Year often brings the fare down and gives you more choice of airline.
Arriving at Bengaluru airport
You will land at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), at Devanahalli, about 35 to 40 km north of the city. Most international flights use Terminal 2, which is modern, green and easy to get around. Allow one to one and a half hours into town by taxi, longer in evening traffic. Prepaid taxi counters, Uber and Ola all operate from the arrivals area, and the airport bus is a cheap option if you are travelling light.
If family are meeting you, give them your flight number and terminal. The airport is large.
5 tips for booking Wellington to Bengaluru flights
1. Build the trip around the long-haul leg
The long-haul flight sets the price and the timing. Pick the best Auckland or Australia departure to Bengaluru first, then add the Wellington connection. We do this for you, which is why Wellington fares are quoted on request rather than listed online.
2. Book it all on one ticket
One booking means your bags are checked through, your connection is protected, and if the first flight runs late the airline has to get you to Bengaluru. Two separate tickets can look cheaper and cost a lot more when something goes wrong.
3. Give Auckland enough time
At Auckland you move from the domestic terminal to the international terminal. Allow at least two to three hours. It is a short walk or a free shuttle, but you will need to clear security again, and families with children or elderly parents will appreciate the breathing space.
4. Check your Australian transit visa before you route via Sydney or Melbourne
New Zealand citizens can transit Australia on their passport. Indian passport holders, including NZ residents and students, usually need a free Australian transit visa even if they stay inside the terminal. We explain who needs what in our guide to transiting Australia on the way to India.
5. Students and teachers: use MannPass
Verified NZ students, teachers, lecturers and education staff can join MannPass for an extra $25 off selected return flights between New Zealand and India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other offers.
Travelling with family, or for work and study
Bengaluru draws three kinds of Wellington travellers. IT professionals heading to the city’s tech parks. Students, and the parents visiting them. And families going home to Karnataka and the south for weddings, festivals and holidays. A few practical notes for each:
- Working trips: ask us about fares with free date changes. Project dates move, and a flexible ticket is cheaper than a change fee.
- Students and parents: book everyone on one booking so seats are together, and check baggage before you pack. Allowances differ by airline and fare type.
- Elderly parents: we can arrange wheelchair assistance at every airport and special meals on every leg. Tell us when you book, not at the airport.
- Documents: check passports have six months’ validity. Travellers who are not Indian citizens need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website and check SafeTravel before you go.
- Paying for it: ask about flexible payment options such as PayLite and Afterpay when you book.
