Flights Auckland to Ahmedabad: Routes, Journey Times and Tips for Gujarati Families

Flights Auckland to Ahmedabad Routes Journey Times and Tips for Gujarati Families

Heading home to Gujarat? Here is how the one-stop routes compare, what to expect when you land, and how to make the trip easier for the whole family.

Quick answer: how do I fly from Auckland to Ahmedabad?
There are no non-stop flights. The usual way is one stop, through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub such as Dubai or Doha. Total journey time is typically 18 to 26 hours depending on the hub and the layover. Fares start from NZD $1020 per person return (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). Book early for the December and January school holidays, request vegetarian meals when you book, and keep the family on one booking.

Why so many Kiwi families fly this route

Auckland has one of the largest Gujarati communities in New Zealand. Walk through Papatoetoe, Sandringham or Mt Roskill and you will hear Gujarati at the dairy, the temple and the cricket ground. Many families here have parents in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat or the villages around them.

So the Auckland to Ahmedabad trip is not a holiday for most of our customers. It is going home. Weddings, Uttarayan, a grandparent’s birthday, a new baby to show off. That changes how you plan it. You want the fewest hassles, the right meals, and a landing time that works for whoever is picking you up.

Flights Auckland to Ahmedabad: the one-stop routes

Ahmedabad’s airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (airport code AMD). From Auckland you will connect once, through one of three types of hub.

Via Singapore

Singapore Airlines flies Auckland to Singapore, then Singapore to Ahmedabad. This is usually the shortest total journey, and Changi is an easy airport to wait in with children or older parents. Layovers vary from a couple of hours to most of a day, so check the connection time before you book.

Via Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur connections can be good value. The flying time is similar to Singapore. Some itineraries involve a longer wait or a second stop, so look at the total time, not just the price.

Via the Gulf

Emirates connects through Dubai and Qatar Airways through Doha. The first leg from Auckland is long, around 17 hours, but the second leg into Ahmedabad is short. These routes often land in Ahmedabad in the early morning, which many families like because the whole day is ahead of them. The Gulf hubs also work well if part of the family is flying on to Europe or North America.

What fares look like right now

Here are the Auckland fares on our website as at 7 October 2026. All are return, per person, in NZD, and they change daily.

Route

From (NZD, return, per person)

Note

Auckland – Ahmedabad

$1020

Direct into Gujarat. No domestic connection needed.

Auckland – Mumbai

$920

Cheaper, but add a flight, train or long drive to Gujarat.

Auckland – Delhi

$920

Only worth it if you are visiting the north as well.

Auckland – Bengaluru

$992

For comparison only. Not a sensible route into Gujarat.

The Mumbai fare looks tempting at $100 less. For a family with grandparents and luggage, the extra leg usually costs more than it saves, in money and in energy. Flying straight into Ahmedabad is nearly always the better choice.

Landing in Ahmedabad and getting around Gujarat

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport sits in the north-east of the city, roughly 8 to 10 km from the centre. Most family areas are 30 to 60 minutes away by road, depending on traffic.

  • Getting into the city. Prepaid taxi counters are inside the terminal. App-based cabs also pick up from the airport. If family is collecting you, give them your flight number, not just the arrival time, so they can track delays.
  • Gandhinagar. Gujarat’s capital is about half an hour north of the airport. Easy by taxi.
  • Vadodara. Around two hours south by expressway, or a short train ride from Ahmedabad’s main station.
  • Surat. Roughly four to five hours by road, or a comfortable train journey. Many Surat families prefer a hired car with a driver so the elders can rest.

6 tips for Gujarati families flying from Auckland

1. Ask for vegetarian meals when you book

Every airline on this route offers vegetarian options, but you have to request them in advance. Ask for an Asian vegetarian meal, a Jain meal, or a plain vegetarian meal, whichever suits your family. Tell us when you book and we add it to every passenger. Requests made at the airport are often too late.

2. Keep the whole family on one booking

One booking means seats together, one set of changes if plans shift, and one record for meal and assistance requests. It also makes life easier at check-in with children and grandparents.

3. Book wheelchair assistance for elderly parents

If mum or dad finds long walks hard, ask for wheelchair assistance. It is free, it gets them through the hubs without stress, and it needs to be requested before you fly. Changi, Dubai and Doha are all big airports.

4. Check baggage before you shop

Gifts, sarees, chikki for the cousins. It adds up. Allowances differ by airline and fare type, so check yours before you fill the suitcases. Ask us if you need extra baggage added.

5. Sort documents early

New Zealand passport holders need an Indian visa or a valid OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly. Check passport expiry dates too, especially for children.

6. Students and teachers: join MannPass

Verified NZ students, teachers, lecturers and education staff can join MannPass for free. It takes NZD $25 off selected return flights between New Zealand and India. It is valid for 30 days from verification, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.

When to go

October to March is the comfortable season in Gujarat. December and January are the busiest months for Kiwi families, because they line up with the New Zealand summer holidays and with Uttarayan, the kite festival, around 14 and 15 January 2027. If you are planning a January trip, read our Uttarayan 2027 guide and book well ahead. Those seats go first.

April to June is hot. The monsoon runs roughly from July to September. If you can choose, aim for the cooler months.
