Heading home to Tamil Nadu this summer? Here is how the journey works, which connections make sense for families, and when to book.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Auckland to Chennai?
There are no non-stop flights from Auckland to Chennai. Every itinerary is one-stop or two-stop. The most popular one-stop options connect through Singapore with Singapore Airlines or Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines. Expect roughly 15 hours in the air and 17 to 20 hours overall, depending on the layover. For the December–January summer holidays, book in October if you can. Fares for the school holiday peak usually climb as seats fill. Call Mann Travel on 09 973 1940 for a live quote.
Is there a non-stop flight from Auckland to Chennai?
No. There is no airline flying non-stop between Auckland and Chennai, so all itineraries are one-stop or two-stop. That is not a bad thing. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are two of the easiest airports in Asia to connect through, and the second leg into Chennai is only about four hours.
For most Tamil families in Auckland, the choice comes down to which hub, how long the layover is, and which departure day gives the best fare. We help with all three.
The main routes compared
These are the connections our Auckland customers use most often. Flight times are approximate, taken from airline and flight schedule sites on 2 October 2026, and do not include the layover.
Connection | Airline | Approx. flying time | Good to know |
Via Singapore | Singapore Airlines | About 10h 50m to Singapore, then about 4h 10m to Chennai | Daily. Changi is easy with children and elderly parents. Short second leg. |
Via Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia Airlines | About 11h 30m to Kuala Lumpur, then about 3h 45m to Chennai | Often good value. Total trip around 17 hours with a standard layover. |
Via Australia or the Middle East | Various | Longer. Usually two stops | Worth checking when one-stop fares are high in peak weeks, or when you want to break the journey. |
Door to door, plan for 17 to 20 hours on a one-stop itinerary. Two-stop routes can stretch past 24 hours, so we only suggest them when the saving is real or the one-stop seats are gone.
When to book for the NZ summer holidays
Term 4 ends no later than Friday 18 December 2026. The summer break then runs until Term 1 2027 starts, between 28 January and 3 February depending on the school. Most families want to leave Auckland on the first weekend of the holidays and return in the last week of January. Pongal in mid-January pulls many Tamil families home in the same window.
That is a lot of people chasing the same seats. Airlines release their lower fare classes first and close them as bookings come in, so the price you see in October is usually better than the price in November. Our advice:
Book in October for departures between 18 and 23 December. This is the busiest week out of Auckland.
Fly a few days early if your school finishes early. Departures on 14 to 17 December often cost less and give you more time at home.
Return midweek. Weekend returns in late January fill first.
Stay flexible by a day either side. One day can make a real difference to a family of four.

6 tips for a smoother trip to Chennai
1. Choose a layover that suits your family
Two to four hours is the sweet spot. Shorter than that is stressful with children and bags. Longer than that, especially overnight, wears everyone out before you even reach India.
2. Compare a nearby city
Bengaluru is the closest major airport to Chennai with a “from” fare on our homepage Today: Auckland to Bengaluru from NZD 992 per person, checked 2 October 2026, prices change daily. Bengaluru to Chennai is a short domestic flight or an overnight train. It is not right for everyone, but it is worth a look when Chennai fares are high.
3. Put the whole family on one booking
One booking keeps your seats together and makes any date change simpler.
4. Request meals and seats early
Vegetarian and Hindu meal options need to be requested in advance, not at the gate. The same goes for bassinets, wheelchair assistance and seats together. Tell us when you book and we will add them.
5. Check your documents now
New Zealand passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Most families apply for an e-visa through the official Indian visa website. Check every passport, including the children’s, is valid for at least six months past your return date.
6. Students and teachers: use MannPass
Verified students, teachers, lecturers and education staff in New Zealand can join MannPass. It takes $25 off selected return flights from New Zealand to India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other offers.
Arriving at Chennai airport and getting around Tamil Nadu
Chennai International Airport (MAA) is in the south of the city. At the time of writing, international flights use Terminal 4. Immigration queues can be long when several flights land together, so keep your visa printout and hotel or family address handy.
From the airport you have three simple options. Prepaid taxi counters and ride-share apps are the easiest with luggage and sleepy children. Chennai Metro’s Blue Line has a station linked to the terminals by a walkway, with a trip of roughly 35 to 45 minutes to Chennai Central. Family pick-up is the third.
Heading beyond Chennai? Trains from Chennai Central and Egmore serve Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore and Thanjavur. Domestic flights to Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli save time if you are travelling with elderly parents. And if you have a few spare days, Chennai is also the gateway to the Andaman Islands. Our guide to an Andaman Islands holiday from NZ shows how to add a short beach break to the trip.
Travelling with family: practical tips
Jet lag: New Zealand is 7.5 hours ahead of India in December and January. Shift bedtimes a little earlier in the days before you fly.
Elderly parents: Request wheelchair assistance at booking. It covers the long walks at Singapore and Kuala Lumpur too.
Children: Pack a small bag of snacks and entertainment for the layover. Both hubs have room for kids to stretch their legs.
Baggage: Check the allowance before packing gifts. Allowances vary by airline and fare type.
Insurance and advice: Take out travel insurance for the whole family and read the New Zealand Government’s current travel advice for India before you go.
