Transiting Australia on the Way to India This Summer: Which Kiwi Travellers Need a Transit Visa

Traveler at airport with backpack and passport; signs point to Wellington, Sydney/Melbourne, and India, with a plane on the tarmac.

Connecting through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane? Here is who needs an Australian transit visa, who does not, and how to sort it before the school holidays.

At a glance: who needs a transit visa for Australia on an NZ to India trip?
New Zealand citizens do not. They get a Special Category visa (subclass 444) on arrival and just need an onward ticket. Indian passport holders do, even for a short airside connection. That includes NZ permanent residents and students who hold an Indian passport. The Transit visa (subclass 771) is free, applied for online, and allows up to 72 hours in Australia. Processing can take days or weeks, so apply well ahead. Or skip Australia and fly via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf.

Why this matters before the summer holidays

Many of the best-value flights from New Zealand to India connect through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. That is especially true from Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, where the first leg is often a trans-Tasman hop. Term 4 finishes no later than Friday 18 December 2026, and the first two weeks after that are the busiest departure dates of the year for Kiwi families heading home to India.

We see the same thing every year. A family books a great fare via Sydney, then finds out at check-in that one passenger needed an Australian visa. The airline cannot board them. A free visa that takes a few minutes to apply for ends up costing a rebooked ticket and a ruined start to the holiday.

Who does not need a transit visa: New Zealand citizens

If you travel on a New Zealand passport, you are covered. On arrival in Australia, eligible NZ citizens are granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444) automatically. You do not apply for anything in advance. You just show your passport and your onward ticket to India.

One important point: this exemption is about citizenship, not residence. Your passport decides.

Who does need a visa: Indian passport holders, including NZ residents

Australia lets some nationalities transit without a visa if they stay airside and leave within eight hours. Indian ordinary passport holders are not on that list. So if you hold an Indian passport, you need an Australian visa to connect through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, even if you never leave the international terminal.

The usual answer is the Transit visa (subclass 771). It is free. It is applied for online through ImmiAccount. It allows you to stay in Australia for up to 72 hours while you transit to your next destination. If you already hold a valid Australian visitor visa, you can use that instead.

This applies to:

  • Indian citizens who are NZ permanent residents or resident visa holders.
  • International students in New Zealand on an Indian passport.
  • Parents and grandparents visiting New Zealand on an Indian passport, flying home via Australia.

If you hold another passport, check it against the Home Affairs list. The rules may be different again.

How to apply for the Transit visa (subclass 771)

  1. Create an ImmiAccount The transit visa is online only. Go to the Department of Home Affairs website, create an ImmiAccount and choose the Transit visa (subclass 771). There is no paper form.
  1. Have your onward ticket ready You must show that you are leaving Australia within 72 hours. Your confirmed flight itinerary to India is the key document. Book your flights first, then apply.
  2. Upload your passport and documents You will need a scan of your passport bio page and your travel itinerary. Home Affairs may ask for more, such as proof of your visa for your destination.
  3. Apply well ahead Published processing times vary from a day or two to several weeks. We suggest applying as soon as your flights are confirmed, and at least six to eight weeks before you fly in the December rush. That is our advice, not an official figure.
  4. Keep the grant letter with you The visa is linked to your passport electronically, but carry a printed or saved copy of the grant notice for check-in.

Mixed-passport families: Kiwi kids, Indian-passport parents

The children were born in New Zealand and hold NZ passports. One or both parents still hold Indian passports with NZ residence. On a Sydney connection, the children need nothing. The parents each need a subclass 771 or another valid Australian visa.

A few things to get right:

  • Apply for each adult separately. Each Indian passport holder needs their own application. The children are not included.
  • Check grandparents too. If Nani or Dadaji are travelling with you on an Indian passport, they need one as well.
  • Match names exactly. The visa application, passport and ticket must all carry the same name.
  • Check the Indian side as well. NZ-passport children need an Indian visa or OCI card to enter India. Apply through the official Indian visa website.
  • Read the NZ Government advice. SafeTravel has current entry notes for both Australia and India.

When is the best time to fly from Sydney to Kochi?

Kerala has two seasons that matter to travellers: wet and dry.

  • December to February: dry, clear and comfortable. The best weather of the year, and it lines up with the Australian summer school holidays. Fares rise for Christmas, so book early.
  • Onam (August or September): the biggest homecoming of the year for Malayalis. Seats fill fast and prices follow. If you are going home for Onam, book two to three months ahead.
  • Sabarimala season (mid-November to mid-January): the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage brings heavy traffic through Kochi airport and on the roads south. If you are not on pilgrimage, expect busier flights and a slower drive.
  • June to September: the south-west monsoon. Green, dramatic and often the best value if you do not mind the rain.

Or skip Australia altogether

If the visa feels like one job too many, you do not have to transit Australia at all. From Auckland there are good one-stop options to India through Singapore with Singapore Airlines, through Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines, and through Dubai or Doha with Emirates and Qatar Airways. None of those hubs require a transit visa for Indian passport holders staying airside on a normal connection.

From Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, that means a domestic hop to Auckland first. It is one fewer document to think about. Our new guide to flights from Wellington to Bengaluru shows how the routes stack up.

Fare-wise, Auckland–Delhi and Auckland–Mumbai are from NZD $920 per person, Auckland–Bengaluru from NZD $992 and Auckland–Ahmedabad from NZD $1020, all checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily. Verified students, teachers and education staff can take a further $25 off selected return fares with MannPass. Ask us about flexible payment options such as PayLite and Afterpay.
